About Pretty Good Lutherans

Susan is a three-time Pulitzer Prize nominee who worked as a religion writer for two decades at newspapers such as the Dallas Morning News, Minneapolis Star-Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times. Susan won many awards, including a top honor from the American Academy of Religion in 2002. She holds an undergraduate degree in philosophy and religion; three graduate degrees, including one from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago.

Susan now works as a freelance writer and editor. She’s also an adjunct faculty member at a Chicago-area college, where she teaches classes in World Religions as well as Peace and Justice. Susan is available as a public speaker on a gamut of issues.

Susan created Pretty Good Lutherans in September 2009 to fill a vacuum for independent news coverage of the ELCA that focuses on the members and issues, rather than the denomination’s leaders and organizations. Pretty Good Lutherans provides daily headlines about the ELCA in media across the country as a tool for readers to stay informed on issues and connected to one another. Pretty Good Lutherans also lifts up divergent voices across the ELCA through blog posts, news features, videos and other tools.  Your support will help keep this effort alive.

I have greatly appreciated your tweets, insights and updates, especially during churchwide! I think it is a sad state of affairs the church, including the ELCA finds themselves. We are not a technological group as a whole, and even the ones who claim literacy end up turning more people away than encouraging deeper involvement. How do we tap into the resources we have already sitting in our pews and teach ourselves how to live in the 21st century?

Real-time ELCA news and good story telling from a trained journalist? I’m in!

I too have enjoyed your Tweets and I am looking forward to reading more from you. I will be posting your website on my blog.

Welcome to the blogosphere; you seem to have mastered Twittersville. As one who also attended the ELCA convention and provided regular updates (I blogged, you tweeted), I found your tweets to be an excellent source of leads and ideas. My only regret is that we didn’t bump into each other at the assembly.

I look forward to following your blog, and I may comment on occasion. Thanks for your kind comments about my Spirit of a Liberal blog, and I hope you will offer your comments when you feel the urge.

I’ll be posting this on my website too! I’m glad there is something out there for us Lutherans, even though you’re spending a lot of time on a guy who’s not (Keillor). however, he does give us (sometimes) some pretty good press.

I’m interesting in your writing classes too! Maybe I’ll email you for advice!

I love pglutherans – you have the most interesting tweets that connect me to what’s happening and what’s important – with great wit and writing. You are helping the ELCA through a time of great conflict, while keeping our mission before us.
    Thanks!
