Word Alone launches chaplain corps

Chaplain Corps HandbookThe Word Alone  Network launched a chaplain corps of retired clergy this month.

Their mission? To offer counsel and solace to individuals troubled by partnered gays and lesbians serving in ELCA ministries.

Until last August, the ELCA said gays and lesbians could serve as long as they remained celibate. The celibacy requirement was lifted by voting members at the denomination’s national assembly.

While some  congregations are voting on whether to leave the ELCA, the vast majority are staying. The ELCA is the nation’s largest Lutheran denomination.

According to Word Alone’s Web site, 46 clergy are serving as volunteer chaplains. They are guided by a 15-page handbook, also featured on the site.

  1. Pastor Scott Johnson Says:

Just a thought: if I were an actual military chaplain, I’d be furious about that honorable profession being co-opted for a group’s agenda, no matter what I thought about homosexuality. This is disgusting.
